    Let's Set Sail with Whales and Tales 
    Rising first and second graders, join us for a weeklong ocean adventure! Did you know earth is called the blue planet? Or that the blue whale is the largest animal in the world? We will learn about the wonders of sea life through a variety of engaging activities. Young adventurers will dive into literacy in the morning by using their reading, spelling and writing skills. In the afternoon we will have a whale of a time with math games, and our young scientists will use inquiry-based learning for STEM labs. Arts and crafts will be incorporated throughout the entire session!

  • American Girl Doll Camp

    Does your child love American Girl dolls? Then this is the camp for them! Each day we'll learn about a different American Girl doll, the time period in which she and her family "lived" and explore crafts from then. We'll have fun while we create jewelry for our dolls and ourselves! The week will culminate with a tea party on Friday with food for the dolls and the campers. A fabulous week of fun for all!

  • Chinese Art, Language and Culture 

    Experience a hands-on approach to the art, language and culture of ancient and modern China. Learn how to speak and write in Mandarin Chinese and use traditional materials to create Asian inspired arts and crafts. Also learn to count in Chinese and how to use a Chinese calculator called an “abacus.”

  • Classic Camp

    A traditional day camp with a variety of activities and experiences. Classic Camp is a great opportunity for team building and recreational fun. There will be indoor and outdoor activities including games, physical play and arts and crafts. Add Classic Camp to your morning or afternoon Exploration camp to make a full day. Lunch is included with full days.

  • Creative Coding

    Learn the basics of coding and computer science as you are immersed in STEM activities. Collaborate with other students to program robots to complete tasks, work with emojis as we dive into the Codemoji platform, and participate in offline unplugged coding activities and games. Throughout the program, students will design a website and learn to utilize newly acquired coding skills to advance through interactive lessons. The Codemoji program will challenge students as we advance through HTML, CSS and JS coding basics and will promote the desire to continue coding learning outside of the classroom.

    This camp welcomes dancers of all levels to join St. Catherine's dance teacher Ashley Wyatt for a week full of movement. Dancers in attendance will study different styles and techniques of dance such as jazz, hip-hop, musical theatre and tap and will have the opportunity to showcase their work on the last day.

  • The Science of Oobleck: STEM in Stories

    Our budding scientists will use stories to spark their curiosity and ignite their engineering minds. Each day will focus on a different story and science experiment from Bartholomew and the Oobleck and the creation of slime, to Rose Revere, Engineer and the design of a flying machine, to the Secret Code Inside You and the extraction of DNA from bananas.

  • Whimsical Fairy Cottages

    Ever wanted to attract a magical fairy to your backyard or garden? Now you can! Build them a whimsical cottage using recycled cardboard, hot glue and tons of natural floral materials and beautiful craft supplies. How enchanting! Create fun, whimsical, fantasy gardens, hideaways and houses for fairies and magical creatures.

  • Afternoon Knitting

    Whether beginner or advanced we’ll use knit and purl stitches to form the foundation for basic to more advanced stitches. We will provide you with needles and yarn and you will soon be on your way to enjoying the lifelong skill and pleasure of knitting.

  • All Around Richmond

    Calling all explorers! Want to know more about your city? Hop on the bus with St. Catherine's geography teacher Amy Blake and discover some of the most interesting places Richmond has to offer. Travel to Church Hill, the "birthplace of Richmond'' to visit Chimborazo Park, walk down cobblestone streets and stand at the very spot that gave our city its name. Walk the trails of the James River at Belle Isle and Pony Pasture, once explored by Captain John Smith in 1607. Be dazzled by artwork at the VMFA and meet the statues standing at Capitol Square. Grab an ice cream treat at Bev's while strolling through historic Carytown and find out firsthand why The Fan is called "The Fan." Each day will help make you an expert on RVA!

  • Brilliant Summer Detective Agency

    Calling all amateur detectives! Come develop new crime investigation skills and learn forensic science techniques like ink chromatography, shoe prints, trace evidence identification and more. Extract DNA and identify the crook based on DNA fingerprints.  Fine-tune your problem-solving and critical thinking ability as you decipher clues and process crime scene evidence. Put your sleuthing expertise to the test to solve mock crimes around campus.

  • Code It

    Codemoji’s Code It program’s mission is simple: Teach students to enjoy all things related to coding and the web while building problem-solving and creative thinking skills. Our teachers deliver clear and entertaining instruction to ensure students have fun while learning complex coding skills using emojis that represent HTML text, which lowers the barriers to new coders and increases their excitement and understanding of computer science. Students build animations, websites and video games; explore multiple coding languages; program robots; create STEM-based projects both on and offline, and are encouraged to share their projects when they get home. Students also work with interactive circuit boards to understand the basics of currents and work with their teacher to build a handful of fun hands-on projects.

    Harness your creative talents and hone your writing skills as you create and publish your own original story. Choose your favorite genre and learn to transform your ideas into a written masterpiece. Consider creating a mystery, science fiction or fantasy story, or spin a realistic fiction tale. Students will have the opportunity to create an online book complete with illustrations, vivid color and graphics. Books can be read online or purchased from Story Jumper in paperback or hardback format. Let's write!

    This class is designed for students between the ages of 9 and 12 who are interested in dance. Students that have never danced and are interested in creative movement are welcome to join us! We will cover the basics of ballet, jazz, modern, and contemporary through class exercises and combinations. Throughout the week, they will learn short dances in each genre and learn fun ways to make dances.

You'll summarize your learning in a personalized nature "junk journal," recording your observations using collage, notes, stickers and illustrations.

  • Wonders of the World

    Come along on a safari to explore the sights & sounds of some of the world's most amazing places! Join St. Catherine's geography teacher Amy Blake on a jammin' journey around the globe. Discover the exotic island of Bali with its pulsing gamelan music and Legong dancing, and learn how to make beautiful flower offerings called canang sari. Journey to Australia, the Land Down Under, where you'll meet the wildest of animals, have a taste of vegemite, and make & learn to play your own didgeridoo. Get into the groove on World Drumming day, learning raucous rhythms on instruments from Africa, Asia and the Americas, and even make your own percussion instrument to join in the jams. Each day brings a new adventure to savor sights & sounds from around the planet.

  • "Darkness There, and Nothing More:" Poe's Richmond

     
    Calling all fans of ghosts, mysteries, and dark and stormy nights! This course will explore Richmond author Edgar Allan Poe's life through cemetery and museum visits, poetry readings, and creative writing. Students will work throughout the week to build a personalized "smash book" using old volumes of Poe and artistic flair to capture what they have learned about his life and world. We'll also go on field trips to the Poe Museum and other historical sites.
    Grades: 7-10

    Instructor: The instructor is St. Catherine's history teacher and author Meredith Henne Baker, whose work on early 19th century Virginia history has won two national writing awards. Fun fact: Her first book was prefaced by Edgar Allan Poe's "The Bells" and explored the life of his actress mother, Eliza.

  • Basic Scenic Construction

    Join us in the new theatre shop located in St. Catherine’s new Arts & Innovation Center as we learn basic carpentry skills and how to safely use power tools. These are skills needed to create scenic elements and props for theatrical productions, but are also life skills we all need! We will learn how to construct basic “TV flats”, “Broadway flats” and how to prepare those flats to receive paint during the Scenic painting process. We will also learn how to build basic platforms to elevate actors and create a safe platform for performance. If you like using your hands and you like theatre, this is the class for you! Grades: 7-12

  • Sew and Share

    Learn to use a pattern and sewing machine to make colorful, simple dresses to send to girls who might have never had a new dress of their own. Dresses will be donated to the Dress a Girl Around the World program of Hope 4 Women International. Class time may go towards community service hours.

  • Votes for Women RVA

    Stand by your sisters! Heed the rallying cry of women's suffrage advocates and learn about our activist foremothers through powerful original documents, the arts, and the creation of your own zine!. The women's suffrage movement in Virginia is a story of creativity, justice, and grit. This class will include a field trip to the Maggie Walker House and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture where students will interact with primary sources and original artifacts.
