St. Catherine’s students were honored for their writing with Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
A total of 11 students from the Upper and Middle School were honored this year at the regional level, the most of any independent school in the area and among the highest number for a school in central Virginia. Freshman Kate Oelkers received three awards. In the last five years alone, students submitted nearly 900,000 original works of art and writing.
Entries are judged by panels of highly-qualified professionals who select Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention recipients. Gold Key winners go on to compete at the national level. More than 1,500 students receive national awards each year. Past winners include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has an impressive legacy dating back to 1923. Over the years, the Awards have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers. Twenty-nine St. Catherine's students, representing Upper and Middle School, were honored with Scholastic Arts Awards.
