Director of Athletics Julie Dayton will be inducted into the Richmond Chapter of US Lacrosse Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Director of Athletics Julie Dayton was selected as a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame class for the Richmond Area Chapter of US Lacrosse. The induction ceremony will take place Saturday at the Country Club of Virginia. "I am truly honored to be considered a part of the rich history of women's lacrosse in this area," Dayton said. "Being recognized in the same sentence with Janet Grubbs and Anne Freund--two of the sports icons, is quite humbling. "I am excited about the growth of the Richmond Chapter of US Lacrosse, many people have worked hard to see the Hall of Fame become a reality. The celebration will bring together many legends of the game and continue to strengthen lacrosse in Central Virginia. How awesome to be a part of it all." Dayton was a dominant force in lacrosse while an athlete at Longwood and following her collegiate career. She was a two-time women’s lacrosse All-America selection, scoring 93 career goals. Dayton was a 10-year member of the United States Women’s Lacrosse National Team (1982-91), playing in the 1986 World Cup and the 1984 Olympics Exhibition. Also a member of the inaugural Longwood Athletics Hall of Fame, Dayton was previously inducted into the Virginia Lacrosse Hall of Fame (1997) and the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame (1993). "What an incredible twist of fate that the sport I picked up in college as an aside to field hockey training became a passion and a joy," Dayton said. "Lacrosse has opened doors in my life that I never imagined possible. The game pushed me to be a relentless competitor. The people provided me with mentors, surrounded me with support and gave me lifelong friendships beyond compare. I am very very lucky." Before coming to St. Catherine's, Dayton was the head coach in field hockey at both the University of Virginia (1992-93) and at Dartmouth (1993-99). Dayton was named the 2008-09 Independent School Athletic Administrator of the Year by the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.
