Head of School Search

Head of School Cindy Trask has announced that the end of the 2026-2027 school year will conclude her tenure as Head of St. Catherine’s School after six years in the role. You may read Cindy’s letter to the St. Catherine’s community and an accompanying message from Lane H. Sanderson ’91, Chair of St. Catherine’s Board of Governors, here

Leadership Transition and Search Process

Cindy’s generous and thoughtful 18 month timeline empowers St. Catherine’s to both conduct a comprehensive, nationwide search for St. Catherine’s 13th Head of School and benefit from an extensive transition period.

The Board of Governors has appointed Jill Davenport ’88, Vice Chair of the Board, to chair the Search Committee and has retained the international leadership consulting firm Spencer Stuart to facilitate the process.

Opportunity Statement

In collaboration with our partners at Spencer Stuart, the Search Committee has drawn upon the thoughtful feedback of our entire community—students, faculty, staff, families, alumnae, board members, and friends—to craft a comprehensive Opportunity Statement.

This document serves as a reflection of our collective vision and aspirations, detailing the strategic priorities and leadership qualities we seek in the next Head of St. Catherine’s School.

  • How long will the Head of School Search take? When do you expect to announce the next Head of School?

A Head of School search commonly takes 5-6 months. The goal is to announce the selection of St. Catherine’s next Head of School around the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year. This will allow for several months of transition planning before the new Head assumes responsibilities in July 2027.
  • How will input from the St. Catherine’s community be considered?

The Search Committee is committed to incorporating all perspectives from the St. Catherine’s
community. There are several avenues through which faculty, staff, parents, students, and
alumnae can share their perspective and advice.

First, the team at Spencer Stuart will be on campus in early February, gathering insight from many different groups. Second, all community members will be sent an invitation to participate in an anonymous community-wide e-survey.

Finally, community members are encouraged to email StCatherinesHOS@spencerstuart.com at any point throughout the search process. This confidential inbox, which goes directly to Spencer Stuart, can be used to share insights with the Search Committee, as well as to nominate individuals you think would be a good fit as St. Catherine’s next Head of School.
  • What is the role of Spencer Stuart, the search firm?

Spencer Stuart is the executive search and leadership advisory firm selected by St. Catherine’s School’s Board of Governors. Aaron Mieszczanski and Mary Gorman will assist the Search Committee to ensure a successful process and outcome. Working closely with the committee, they will:
    • Gather input from members of our community;
    • Finalize the Opportunity Statement; and
    • Conduct extensive outreach to identify leaders whose experience, backgrounds, attributes, and characteristics align with St. Catherine’s aspirations.
The Spencer Stuart team will support the Search Committee through the interview and recruitment process, ensuring that the candidates’ and committee’s need for information, diligence, and confidentiality are met.
  • What is the role of the Head of School Search Committee?

The St. Catherine’s School Board of Governors has charged the Search Committee to engage in a thoughtful, thorough process to identify, assess and, ultimately, recommend the best possible candidate for the Board to consider as the next Head of St. Catherine’s School. The St. Catherine's Board of Governors nominates the Head after receiving the Search Committee's recommendation, and the Board of Trustees of Church Schools in the Diocese of Virginia (CSDV) appoints the next Head.
