Dr. Scheckelhoff Announces Retirement

In April 2019, Dr. Terrie Hale Scheckelhoff, the 11th Head of School in St. Catherine’s 129-year history, announced her plan to retire in June 2020 at the conclusion of her eighth year. Dr. Scheckelhoff’s passion for educating girls is undeniable and her accomplishments are many. Under her leadership, St. Catherine’s School has experienced substantial growth, progress, and financial strength, leaving the School in excellent shape for a dynamic new leader to take the reins in 2020 and beyond.

With this announcement, the Board of Governors appointed a Search Committee led by Co-Chairs Dr. Anne Howell McElroy ’78, Past Chair of the Board of Governors, and Macon Hubard Clarkson ’96, Vice Chair of the Board of Governors, to begin the search for the next Head of School. Subsequent updates on the Head of School Search will be posted here.

We have developed a general timeline according to how we anticipate the process will run, but we will make modifications as needed to ensure that we attract, interview, and nominate the best new leader for St. Catherine's School. Ultimately, the decision to appoint St. Catherine's next Head of School resides with the Board of Governors and the Trustees of Church Schools in the Diocese of Virginia.
April 2019
Search Committee was appointed and hired a search consultant to support the Head of School recruitment process.

September 2019
Through on-campus meetings, interviews, and a confidential online survey, St. Catherine’s School community members were invited to share input with our consultants on the qualities desired for the next Head of School. All of these perspectives helped shape the position description for St. Catherine's next Head of School, which is being used throughout the recruitment and interviewing phases.
Carney, Sandoe & Associates recruited and vetted a diverse pool of qualified candidates who were recommended to the Search Committee for further due diligence and additional interviews. The Search Committee conducted further interviews, as well as reference and background checks, and ultimately selected finalist candidates to visit campus for additional meetings, including sessions with students, parents, alumnae, trustees, faculty, staff and administrators.
October 2019
After careful consideration, the Search Committee, with support from the Board of Governors, made the decision to pursue an Interim Head of School for the 2020-2021 school year. This action enables the Search Committee to continue the search process with maximum flexibility to secure our next Head of School to begin in July 2021.
November 2019
The Board of Governors announced the appointment of Lila Lohr to serve as Interim Head of School for the 2020-2021 school year.
Winter through Summer 2020
In conjunction with Carney, Sandoe & Associates, the Search Committee will continue to recruit, evaluate and interview Head of School candidates to start the 2021-2022 school year.
July 2020
The Interim Head of School will commence her responsibilities on July 1, 2020 and help transition the Head-elect once appointed.

July 2021
St. Catherine’s new Head of School will begin his or her journey with us on July 1, 2021.

After evaluating an impressive group of executive search firms, the Search Committee has selected Carney, Sandoe & Associates (CS&A) to partner with us in our Head of School search process. CS&A is a well recognized consulting firm and one of the largest firms that focus exclusively on the education sector. Through their offerings of leadership placement, strategic planning, and executive coaching for independent schools, they have developed an extensive network and meaningful connections with top talent worldwide.
We are excited to work with CS&A Senior Consultants Marguerite McCain Lloyd ’72 and Peter O'Neill, who have worked with many independent schools and universities in a variety of roles. Marguerite brings a wealth of diverse experiences including teaching at the high school and graduate levels, and a robust career in law and nonprofit management before joining CS&A. Most recently she completed several Head of School placements at notable all-girls' schools of similar size and demographics. She has fond memories of her days as a St. Catherine's boarder. Peter has 30 years of experience as a Head of various independent schools, including 20 years at Garrison Forest School, an all-girls' day and boarding school in Baltimore County, Md. He also served in leadership positions with the National Coalition of Girls Schools (NCGS) and the National Association of Principals of Schools for Girls. The depth and breadth of their combined knowledge, experience, and extensive connections—especially related to all-girls' schools—will be invaluable.
