New Speaker Series Launched

Tucker Carrington from the Mississippi Innocence Project was the first speaker in the Camp Speaker Endowment series.
As the inaugural speaker for the Camp Speakers Endowment, Tucker Carrington spoke openly about his passion for people as the founding director of the Mississippi Innocence Project.
The St. Christopher’s alum also gave St. Catherine’s Upper School students some very sound advice.
“Open your hearts and minds to someone else’s narrative,” Carrington said. “Be open to other perspectives.”
Carrington visited St. Catherine’s on Wednesday as the first speaker in the newly established Camp Speakers Endowment. He spoke in chapel and visited with students throughout the day.
The Camp Speakers Endowment was created in memory of St. Christopher’s alum Paul Douglas Camp III ’56. His daughter Elizabeth Hanson graduated from St. Catherine’s in 1984. The Speakers Endowment was inspired by Paul’s devotion to his family, to education and to the community. Although Paul Camp was a dedicated servant of many organizations, above all he valued education and the strong foundation in service and character embodied in St. Christopher’s and St. Catherine’s Schools.
It was fitting that Carrington was the first speaker in the series as he was a sociology student of Paul’s wife, Lee.
“Tucker was the perfect inaugural speaker,” Elizabeth Camp Hanson said. “My Dad, Paul Camp, would be so pleased.”
As a law professor at the University of Mississippi and a former public defender, Carrington’s work has been covered by national media outlets and was the subject of a documentary. His work with the Mississippi Innocence Project has led to nine exonerations and five legislations passed since 2007. These exonerees served a combined total of 202.5 years.
Carrington takes pride in this fact and told students about texts and messages he has received from the former prisoners. But his love for the job lies in one simple task.
“I have the privilege to be able to listen to the stories of others,” he said.
