Kristina Dickey's deisgn was honored at the VMFA Teen Stylin' show.
The assignment was clear for Kristina Dickey and her fellow aspiring fashion designers.
Drawing inspiration from the Hollywood Costumes exhibit and a painting in the VMFA, create a wearable fashion garment made of non-traditional materials.
The result for the St. Catherine’s junior was a winning design, earning her a trip to New York City.
Dickey’s design, titled “Chaser” was named Most Wearable at the VMFA Teen Stylin’ Show in early December. A total of 64 teen designers and models showcased the fashion in front of a sold out crowd in the VMFA’s Leslie Cheek Theater. The theme of the show was “Costume Couture."
As a winner, Dickey will travel to New York in April. Along with the other winners she will tour Parsons The New School for Design, the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
“I couldn't be more excited,” Dickey said. “I'm so honored to have won an award. I can't wait to see everything there along with the other designers, who are now great friends of mine.”
Dickey selected the 18th century hunting piece, called "The Joys of the Chase" by John Collett as her design inspiration. She used cut up soda cans for the tiles of the pants and top and black plastic netting for the skirt, which was modeled by fellow junior Gracie Rebman.
