Dr. Hale, RPh, Ph.D., Associate Dean of the College of Pharmacy at Ohio State University and brother to Head of School, Dr. Terrie Scheckelhoff presents the "Generation Rx" initiative.
Dr. Ken Hale Rph, Ph.D., and Associate Dean of the College of Pharmacy at Ohio State University was welcomed to the St. Catherine’s campus last Friday by none other than his sister, and St. Catherine’s Head of School, Dr. Terrie Scheckelhoff. Dr. Hale sprent Friday presenting Ohio State’s “Generation Rx” initiative, which he co-founded.
For the morning session, Dr. Hale hosted a “Generation Rx” parent enrichment workshop entitled, "Preventing Prescription Medication Abuse: What Parents Need to Know." The workshop provided parents with medication safety and prescription drug abuse prevention resources.
More than 40 college and government officials from around Virginia attended Dr. Hale’s afternoon presentation. Representatives from the University of Virginia, University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, the Virginia Department of Health and the Community Coalitions of Virginia were in attendance for the presentation.
“I want people to understand the scope, causes and potential consequences of prescription drug misuse and abuse,” Hale said. “And I want to highlight what we all can do to prevent these behaviors, such as securely storing our medications, safely disposing of medications that are no longer needed, modeling safe medication-taking practices to those around us, and discussing this important public health problem with our friends and family members.”
Between the two presentations, Dr. Hale met with St. Catherine’s Upper School Independent Research students to learn more about their projects and the research they have been conducting over the course of the school year. This lunchtime meet and greet also gave the students an opportunity to ask Dr. Hale questions about his Generation Rx initiative.
“Meeting with the independent research students was a highlight of my trip to Richmond,” Hale said. “What a wonderful group of young women! They are working on impressive projects and have big dreams for what they hope to accomplish in life.”
Dr. Hale is the recent recipient of the 2013 Linwood F. Tice Friend of APhA-ASP Award. He has also been recognized with two Distinguished Teaching Awards, Ohio State’s Ralph V. Foster Friend of APhA-ASP Award and the 2013 Beal Award from the Ohio Pharmacists Association.
