The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts was abuzz with excitement Wednesday night as 40 student designers and 32 student models sauntered down the runway in wearable art reflecting the theme of the show Life Ever After.
In October students gathered in Studio B and chose a piece of art from the VMFA collection as inspiration for their designs. They then spent eight afternoons attending workshops at the Pauley Education Center rendering, cutting, sculpting and building the incredible pieces viewed on the runway. Music pulsed through the Cochran Atrium as the designers from 27 middle and high schools in our area strutted their artistic and engineering skills.
Almost ten percent of the talent on the runway came from St. Catherine’s School.
Freshman Ella Beth Southall took first prize in the Most Wearable category for her glamorous display of appliqued entitled Wheel of Temptation modeled by freshman Liza Mickens. Ella Beth will be traveling to New York City with the top six Teen Stylin’ designers in April.
Freshman Tina Dickey was runner up in the Best Use of Recyclable Materials category for her design entitled Vitality featuring recycled aluminum cans, modeled by freshman Annabel O’Hagan. Junior Alex McEachin made her third appearance in the show this year featuring her piece entitled Lifeline: Part Two modeled by veteran junior Claire Pullen. Freshman Erin Winchester lit up the runway wearing a Tiffany Lamp inspired piece called Back to the Garden designed by her brother (and St. Christopher’s senior) Michael Winchester.
Southall’s fantastic gown and all our designer’s renderings are on display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in the Education Gallery until January 29, 2012.
