Saints Slay Titans 1-0

J. Hartman
Under a fading sky with climes locked in stubborn winter's weakening grasp, the Saints looked to extend their winning streak against their vaunted rivals from Trinity. Seeing their varsity team fall to St. Catherine's in the afternoon's earlier game clearly rankled the ire of the JV Titans. These younger players, with fire in their bellies, looked to avenge the loss suffered by their sister squad. Our Saints, no shrinking daisies themselves, would have something to say about this. As the saying goes, "You don't just waltz into Goochland and expect to march out with a win." Coach McIntosh had her girls primed and ready for an old-fashioned back alley brawl. After teams, coaches, and referees exchanged pre-game pleasantries, it was go time.

The Saints picked up where they left off against STAB the week before. Employing a complex offense more familiar perhaps to students of geometry than sport, St. Catherine's weaved triangles and found angles of attack not seen since Euclid plied his trade. From the opening whistle the Saints controlled both possession and tempo, never seeming off-guard against the constant pressure applied by their opponents. Shots came early and often from the home team, leaving some in attendance to wonder just how many the Saints might score. ("I wonder how many they will score?" I heard someone say.)

If "Shaka" Connor Haynes was the maestro in the midfield, then Margaret "My Little Pony" Horsely was first violin. Together with Hallie Reichel and "The Hustler", McKenzie Licata, (we'll call them first piccolo and xylophone) they performed a symphony this day, orchestrating the most beautiful of music. The dulcet tone brought by these girls was anchored by the shinguard shaking, booty rattling bass provided by the back line of defenders, led once again by Crystal "The Iron Curtain" Turner, Selina "The Overallaraound" Horsely, Alex "The Gate Keeper" Tolleson, and in her return to play, the fleet-footed Keeilah "Liquid Smoke" Moseley.
After an opening cat and mouse game between the two sides, Catherine "The Wrecking Ball" Simpson, did what she does best and put the baby to bed with an emphatic goal. Riley "Lollipop" Ogden had another energetic outing, knifing her way through the defense like a kid at a crowded tater tot bar. A special shout out to Kristina "The German Monster" Dickey who literally ripped up the field with her colossal effort out there today.

In the end the Saints sent the Titans back to their home at river's edge, with their only consolation a parting gift of a disappointing 1-0 loss. Next up...Collegiate. Cougar meat, people. Cougar meat.
