Sobon Hall of Fame Bound

Middle School English teacher Sarah Sobon will be inducted into the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame later this month.
Sarah Sobon simply loved field hockey. That love drove her to work hard on the field each and every practice and game.
The St. Catherine’s English teacher never imagined her efforts would lead her to the hall of fame. Sobon will be inducted into the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 30. Washington College is located in Chestertown, Md.
“This pushes the dedication I put forth to the forefront and that feels extremely special,” Sobon said. “Athletics made me believe that I was able to do anything.  It gave me incredible self-confidence and the ability to problem solve.”
The first All-American in Washington College field hockey history, Sobon helped lead the Shorewomen to their first-ever conference championship and their first two NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.
A midfielder, Sarah earned All-Centennial Conference second-team honors as a freshman in 1994 after scoring two goals and recording four assists. The following season, she netted four goals and two assists and was named to the All-Centennial Conference first team.
In 1996, the Shorewomen went 13-5, were nationally-ranked, and reached the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time. Sobon was a big reason for the Shorewomen’s success, scoring eight goals and recording a school-record 12 assists – a record that stands to this day. She repeated as an All-Centennial first-team selection and was recognized as a first-team Regional All-American.
As a senior in 1997, Sobon led the Shorewomen to a 16-3 record, a share of the Centennial Conference Championship, a national ranking, and a second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Sobon scored a career-high nine goals and added eight assists as a senior, earning All-Centennial first-team honors for the third year in a row and Regional All-American second-team honors for the second straight year. She was also named a second-team All-American, becoming the first player in program history to be recognized on the national level.
Sobon finished her career with 23 goals, 26 assists, and 72 points. She currently ranks second all-time in school history in assists, fifth in points and tied for sixth in goals.
