Speakers Visit Campus to Talk About Accepting Other Cultures
Ahmed Al-Mukhaini and Michael Bos visited St. Catherine's to share their experiences and the development of their friendship.
As the girls settled into their seats and introductions were made, Ahmed Al-Mukhaini turned to the seventh and eighth graders gathered and asked them a pointed question. "Why do we have prejudice?" he asked. It was an appropriate question for this group gathered on the third floor of Bacot during the lunch hour. They are all part of the Middle School Prejudice Awareness Summit (PAS). Their answers varied, but were the perfect set up for Al-Mukhaini and Michael Bos, who were visiting St. Catherine's Tuesday as part of a partnership between St. Catherine's, St. Christopher's, The Steward School, Collegiate and The Center for Interfaith Reconciliation to sponsor "Engaging the Muslim World: Stories from Oman." The speakers kicked off the week with a community-wide event, "Cross-Cultural Friendships: The Basis of Change," Sunday at Steward. The two men shared their message with St. Catherine's students on Tuesday. They will visit all four schools during the week. They engaged in conversations with the girls and talked about cultural differences. "We need to reconcile our differences for the common good," Al-Mukhaini told the girls in PAS. "We need to focus on individuals. God brought us all here for a common good." After opening the day with a joint chapel service, Al-Mukhaini and Bos, who both reside in Oman, visited different classrooms around campus meeting with students, faculty and administrators from all three divisions. They spoke about their unlikely friendship, accepting cultural differences and even addressed clothing, music and the pop culture of the youth in Oman.
