Science Exploration at Kings Dominion

Fifth and eighth graders partnered to observe and feel the laws of physics at nearby theme park.
As culmination to their science units on motion and force, the fifth and eighth grade students partnered to attend the 2009 Math and Science Day at Kings Dominion on Friday.
The girls, divided into groups of 6-10 students,  enjoyed a wonderful day observing and feeling firsthand the laws of physics. Additionally, each student had a work packet to complete regarding her observations of gravity rides and roller coaster rides.
"The partnership of fifth and eight graders has been a very beneficial service learning activity and has strengthened the girls’ concepts and enjoyment of physics," fifth grade science teacher Evelyn Boatright said.
Leading up to the visit, fifth and eighth graders worked together during planned Science Talk activities. The first Science Talk, was a simple machine scavenger hunt, followed by demonstrations of physics laws, by eighth grade students. Another Science Talk, gave the fifth grade students the lead, as they demonstrated the compound machines they designed and built.
