Saints overcome cold shooting night with tough defense to beat St. Bridget's 15-9.
St. Catherine's called a quick first quarter timeout Monday, and as the players huddled to discuss their slow start, Mary Fig Stallings talked about the aggression of their opponent.
"They are playing us really tough," she said.
The other players nodded in agreement.
"We need to be tougher than them," Mary Fig continued.
And with that, the Saints returned to the game with a new intensity that was evident in the way they played defense. Mary Fig did not score a point. She attempted only one shot. But the captain led a defensive charge that held St. Bridget's to a poor shooting night. Mary Fig made it difficult for St. Bridget ballhandlers by bumping them, swiping at them and mirroring their every move. She set an example of how to play the top of a 2-3 zone.
Mary Fig's play inspired Maddy Mallory and Clemie Norman to regulate inside, making it extremely difficult for St. Bridget's post players to get clean looks.
On offense, the Saints were paced with balanced scoring. Libby Nelson, Ellie Wallace and Liza Blackburn scored 4 points each while Selina Horsley added 3 points. Libby displayed a couple of nifty basketball moves for her two scores. On one occasion, Libby ran the court, received a beautiful halfcourt pass from Mary Fig, avoided a defender with the dribble and banked in a soft layup--all in full speed.
Lily Constine continued her development at point guard. She ran the halfcourt offense with precision, making smart decisions with the ball. Her play at point guard will be key during the homestretch of the season.
The Saints were without two players--Charlotte Bemiss and McKayla Boyd--due to injuries.
