Students and Staff Attend Conference in San Antonio
Students attended the Student Diversity Leadership Conference while faculty and staff attended the NAIS People of Color Conference. Both events were led by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).
Six Upper School students and three faculty/staff members attended the NAIS People of Color Conference (PoCC)/Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) in San Antonio last week. Both students and adults participated in a variety of workshops and heard from inspiring speakers including Nikki Giovanni for the PoCC and Amanda Nguyen for SDLC.
"By far my favorite part was hearing Amanda Nguyen speak about her life story and perseverance to change the world and make it safer for women," said junior Adriana Walker, who attended SDLC along with juniors Ava Holloway, Taylor Meredith and Alice Schnell, and freshman Miller Ambrogi. "I also enjoyed separating into affinity groups where I was able to be in a room of people like me, who can relate to my experiences."
Andrea Byrd '06, Tish Canady and Gina Friend attended the PoCC. The NAIS People of Color Conference is "the flagship program of the National Association of Independent Schools’ commitment to equity and justice in teaching, learning and sustainability for independent schools."
The NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference is "a multiracial, multicultural gathering of upper school student leaders (grades 9-12) from across the U.S. and abroad." This year's theme was The People: Leveraging Our Community to Preserve Our Humanity.
