Designing One Hundred Dresses

Fourthies designed dresses featuring positive and uplifting messages.
The Fourthies showcased their creativity through design with The Hundred Dresses project.
Fourth graders designed their own individual dresses to incorporate a positive or uplifting message. They then created the dresses out of paper to hang in the halls of the Lower School.
The project followed the reading of "The Hundred Dress" a book by Eleanor Estes. It is a story about a young girl who is lonely and bullied.
In the story, Wanda Petronski tells the students in her class that she has 100 dresses hanging in a row in her closet. The other girls tease her, knowing that she wears the same dress to school each day. There is a contest at school and the girls are asked to design a dress.
Wanda wins the prize for best design and the girls are amazed when the 100 dresses are put on display in the classroom. They realized that their teasing was unnecessary and cruel, so they wrote her a letter to share their amazement that Wanda truly did have one hundred dresses.
"The biggest lesson we can learn from this book is to speak up when others are being bullied and show kindness and care for those who are lonely and afraid," fourth grade teacher Mayan Cavallo said.
