Library Department Philosophy:
St. Catherine's libraries strive to follow the school's philosophy of fostering a love of learning, encouraging individual curiosity, and involving students in intellectual discovery beyond the classroom by using relatable, authentic examples to demonstrate good research skills; nurturing creativity, self-confidence, and perseverance in navigating an information-rich world; and providing a variety of materials, adaptable spaces, and services that support opportunities for both independent and collaborative study.
Goals:
- The students will formulate and employ strategies to locate information in all areas of the resource collection – digital, print, and non-print – and be able to transfer these strategies for use in other libraries.
- The students will evaluate the relevancy and validity of information available.
- The students will synthesize, integrate, and cite information from a wide variety of sources in multiple formats.
- The students will develop an appreciation of literature from diverse cultures, and an interest in reading.
- The students will recognize the value of reading a variety of print and digital information sources for learning, problem-solving, and pleasure.
- The students will be able to work individually or as members of a team to locate and use information.
- The students will be aware of and benefit from the coordination of library services between St. Catherine's and St. Christopher's, and the cooperation between the school, public, and academic libraries in the city.
