The high school seniors recognized here were nominated by area schools for excellence on the playing field and in the classroom. A total of $55,000 in scholarship money will be awarded. From the athletes listed below and the monthly Scholar-Athlete winners who are seniors, 10 girls and 10 boys were chosen to receive college scholarships. The top boy and girl will receive $7,500 each. Two runners-up will receive $4,000 apiece. The remaining eight girls and eight boys will receive $2,000 scholarships. Winners and runners-up will be announced tomorrow at the Scholar-Athlete banquet at 7 p.m. at the Jefferson Hotel. Mike London, head football coach for the national champion University of Richmond Spiders, is the featured speaker. The finalists, announced earlier in The Times-Dispatch, are denoted with asterisks. The Sports Backers' teams of the year for boys and girls will be announced at the banquet. Each school's athletic program will receive $1,000. The runners-up will receive $500. Also, CJW Sports Medicine will present its comeback athletes of the year awards.


Appomattox Regional GS
Sarah Rainey was named Tri-Rivers District player of the year in tennis and was this year's champion in singles and doubles. She earned first-team all-district honors for singles and doubles and was a three-year team captain. A three-year all-academic team member, she will attend Randolph-Macon College. James Kanaan was co-captain of the soccer team and first-team all-district and second-team all-region. He is a member of the National Honor Society and an Eagle Scout. Also, a member of scouting's Order of the Arrow. He will attend Virginia Tech for engineering.

Armstrong
Kiara Jordan played five positions in softball and was cheerleading captain for three years. She is a member of the National Honor Society. Also has been a member of Student Council and participated in Quiz Bowl. She will attend Virginia State University. Gabriel Thornton was the football team captain and placed second in his weight class in the Capital District wrestling tournament. Has been all-academic as a football player the last four years. Is a member of the National Honor Society, senior class president and performs in the concert band. Will attend VCU.

Atlee
* Emma DeJarnette is a state Group AAA pole vault champion as well as a gymnast. Captured three state titles, four regional titles and numerous district titles during the indoor and outdoor seasons. Was a Hanover Scholar, on the class council and a member of the all-girls and mixed show choirs. Has a 4.08 GPA and will attend Virginia Tech.* Ben DeJarnette , Emma's twin, was the Times-Dispatch runner of the year in cross country and indoor track. Won the state indoor title in the 3,200 and the state outdoor 3,200 crown. Has multiple region and district titles in cross country, the 1,600 and 3,200. Was editor-in-chief of the student newspaper and a member of Quill and Scroll Honor Society. Has a 4.57 GPA and will attend Oregon.

Benedictine
Michael Goldberg was a four-year varsity starter in baseball, all-state academic and MVP of the L.C. Bird tournament. Finished career with 98 hits and 11-0 pitching record. Is Bravo Co. commander, a member of the National Honor Society, volunteers with Special Olympics and has 4.1 GPA (fourth in the class). Is headed to Davidson College.

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot
Jordan Hall was co-captain and MVP of the volleyball team and served as captain of the softball team. She is a successful competitive horseback rider. The salutatorian (4.09 GPA), Hall was vice president of the National Honor Society. She will attend the University of Michigan. Joseph Pfab is the class valedictorian with a 4.1 GPA. He has been a member of the Scholastic Bowl, Battle of the Brains and forensics teams and is an outstanding pianist. In tennis, he played No. 1 or No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles in his three-year career. The doubles team was tops in the VCC this year. He's headed to Virginia Tech.

Chesterfield Community
David Copeland starred in basketball and is the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,732 points. He was a three-time, first-team all-Tri-Rivers District selection and was this year's district player of the year. He was first-team all-region and second-team all-state. Is a member of the National Honor Society and on the distinguished honor roll.

Clover Hill
Kathleen Kraines ran cross country for four years and is a three-year varsity soccer player. She was president of the National Honor Society and art honor society and secretary of the math honor society. She earned a 5.06 GPA in the math and science center and will enroll at MIT.* Chris Smith excelled as a football wide receiver and set school records for receptions (55), touchdowns (15) and yards (920). He had five interceptions, three of which he returned for TDs. Was all-district, all-region, All-Metro and all-state. Also starred in baseball. Compiled a 4.5 GPA (fifth in the class). Was a member of the Senior Advisory Council. Will attend Yale where he will play football.

Collegiate
* Carter Stephens has been a varsity swimmer six years and captain the past three. She was named all-LIS 13 times over a five-year period and NISCA All-American the past two years. Has worked as an assistant coach and lifeguard. Her GPA is 3.87. She will attend and swim at Princeton University.* Stuart Ferguson is one of the top swimmers in the country. Was the high point swimmer at the NCSA Junior Nationals and qualified for his third Junior National team. An All-American and owner of numerous state and school records, he won nine state championships. His GPA is 3.75, and he will attend Auburn on a swimming scholarship.

Colonial Heights
Candice Corrigan was a four-year letter winner for softball and competition cheerleading. She was a two-year Golden Glove recipient for softball, captain of the softball and cheerleading teams and named to the all-academic team for both sports. She ranks fifth in her class with a 4.3 GPA and will attend Virginia. Emil Iqbal ran cross country and indoor and outdoor track. Was all-academic and all-district indoors. He was president of the National Honor Society and vice president of the Technology Student Association. Ranked 13th in the class with a 4.04 GPA, he will attend William and Mary.

Cosby
* Jenna Moye holds the school record at 1,600 and 3,200 meters and in cross country. She received all-America honors in addition to her all-state achievements. She volunteers at Winterpock Elementary as a kindergarten aide, has a 4.6 GPA and will attend VMI and run track. Mike Birnbaum was first-team all-district in football and wrestling. In football, he led the team in tackles. In wrestling, he qualified for the state tournament. He also played baseball and was a team captain. He took all honors classes, finishing with a 4.85 GPA that ranks him fifth in his class. He won the West Point Leadership Award and will attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

Deep Run
Briana Hudson stars in the high jump and triple jump and is headed to the University of North Carolina. She captured 11 district, five region and three state titles. She won the state outdoor triple jump for the second year in a row. Was a member of the Spanish Honor Society and involved in student government. Maintained a 4.1 GPA.* Matthew Armentrout won the National Scholastic Indoor pole vault in March and capped his high school career with a victory in the Group AAA state outdoor meet. Is a member of the National Honor Society and math honor society. Started and runs Matthew's Mailbox Makeovers, his own business. Compiled a 4.45 GPA and will pole vault at Virginia.

Dinwiddie
Kellie Bridgeman was the softball team's rookie of the year as a freshman and MVP as a senior when she hit .558 with 28 RBI and had 14 extra base hits and was named to the all-region team. She earned three letters in volleyball. Is a member of the National Honor Society. She has a 3.72 GPA and will play softball at Longwood. Daniel Rogerson has been a wrestling standout for four years. He is the first General to reach 100 career wins (106-56 with 71 pins). Was the Central District champion at 152 pounds as a senior. Is a member of National Honor Society and is a recreation association wrestling coach and official. Sports a 3.6 GPA and is headed to VMI.

Douglas Freeman
Kate Furgurson was a member the Rebels' 3,200 relay team and earned all-district honors in the 800. She was the cross country captain and MVP. She is secretary of the math honor society and received the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award. Her GPA of 5.02 ranks her No. 1 in her class. She is going to William and Mary.* Alec Ward was runner-up at the state indoor meet in the 1,000 meters and the 1,600 relay. He was MVP and captain of the team and finished 19th in state cross country. He was co-founder of the Freeman Model U.N. Club and has logged numerous hours of community service. He has a 4.71 GPA and will attend Virginia.

George Wythe
Gina Gabrielle played volleyball, basketball and ran track. Involved in the school's Team Up community service projects. Member of the Student Government Association and the National Technical Honor Society. Her 4.41 GPA ranked first in the class. Will attend James Madison. Joel Simms played football and basketball. Involved in the school's Team Up community service projects and helped organize Fire Safety and Child Abuse Prevention Awareness program. Was a member of the National Honor Society. Has a 4.26 GPA and will attend James Madison.

Goochland
McKenzie Dewar was captain of the soccer and volleyball teams and part of the competition dance team. Was a member of the National Honor Society and Goochland Ambassadors, vice president of the Key Club, treasurer of the Interact Club and was active in her church. Has a 4.3 GPA and will attend Virginia. Kyle Chadwick was captain of the track team and played football. Competed at 800 meters in the region meet four straight years. Was president of the SCA and Key Club and treasurer of the National Honor Society and is active in his church. Is the class valedictorian with a 4.73 GPA. Will attend Virginia.

Hanover
* Kristin Carpenter won Capital District volleyball player of the year, first-team all-district, all-region and All-Metro for four years. Won multiple player of the year awards as a senior. She is an AVCA all-American, one of Volleyball Magazine's Fab 50 and one of Richmond Magazine's Top 10 Athletes. Won a gold medal on a U.S. National team. Is Hanover's School Board rep, carried a 4.1 GPA and will attend Penn State. Bryce Renick played soccer and volleyball. He received all-academic awards in each sport and was captain of the soccer team his senior year. He is a member of the National Honor Society and a Hanover Scholar. He has a 4.56 GPA and will study engineering at Virginia Tech.

Henrico
Kerri Murphy played field hockey, softball and Maccabi basketball. Earned all-district honors in field hockey and was all-academic on the district and region levels in field hockey. Was all-academic in softball as well. Member of the three honor societies. Earned first in the district as Envirothon team member. Has a 4.86 GPA and is headed to Virginia. Dylan Norvell played two years of varsity soccer and football (place kicker). Was captain of the soccer team. Is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate with a 4.4 GPA. Member of three honor societies, volunteers for numerous organizations and will attend Washington and Lee.

Hermitage
Samantha Stephenson was a field hockey co-captain her senior year. She dances annually at the Lebanese Food Festival. With a 4.68 GPA, she is ranked sixth in her class and will attend Virginia Tech to study architecture. James Atkinson was a volleyball player and earned all-district honors. He finished his senior year with 216 kills. A member of the Humanities Leadership Board and National Honor Society, he will attend Virginia Tech.

Highland Springs
Shandell Taylor has been a member of the basketball and soccer teams for four years and has been district all-academic in both sports. Has taken dual enrollment classes at J. Sargeant Reynolds and VCU. She will attend Eastern Mennonite University.* Christopher Wheeler ranks No. 1 in his class with a 4.87 GPA and will enroll at the University of Tennessee for nuclear engineering. He played volleyball for two years and was first-team all-district as a senior. He was vice president of the National Honor Society and a member of the French and math honor societies. Also participated in robotics.

Hopewell
Megan McGrath starred in field hockey for four years, softball for three and played a year of soccer. She was all-district, all-region and All-Metro in field hockey. A member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, she ranks 10th in her class with a 3.9 GPA. Longwood is her destination in the fall. Rashad Tims earned MVP status and three letters in football and received two letters for basketball. Was a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions and the Technology Student Association. He is headed to Shenandoah University where he will play football.

Huguenot
Jasmin Morris was on the competition cheer team. She was a member of honor societies for science, math and French and a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. Worked as a nutritional assistant at a medical center. Has a 3.91 GPA and will attend Hampton University. Derek Brown was the point guard on the district champion basketball team and co-captain of the golf team. Was a member of Future Business Leaders of America and Key Club and active in his church. Recipient of the Henderson Scholar-Athlete Award. Has a 3.64 GPA and will attend VCU.

James River
* Jenna Taylor earned Dominion District field hockey player of the year honors as a junior and senior and was the region player of the year and an all-state selection as a senior. Is a two-time All-Metro first-team pick. She is a member of the National Honor Society and was an SCA Senator. Carries a 4.65 GPA and will attend James Madison and play field hockey.* Nick Austin was named Times-Dispatch golfer of the year as a sophomore, junior and senior and was the Central Region player of the year the past two years. He helped the Rapids win the state Group AAA tournament last fall. Co-founded the table tennis club. Was a member of the National Honor Society and Principal Leadership Council. Has a 4.50 GPA and will play golf at the University of Richmond.

John Marshall
Quinisha Brown played basketball for four years, softball for three and was captain of both teams as a senior. She is a member of the National Honor Society, yearbook staff and involved in the National Football Foundation's Play-It-Smart program. Has a 3.25 GPA. Randall Ward attended Community High (3.4 GPA) and was a basketball standout at JM. A wing and point guard, he was a team captain and earned first-team all-district and second-team all-region and All-Metro accolades. Was all-academic on the district and region levels. Is bound for Hampden-Sydney College.

J.R. Tucker
Natalie Babik was a four-year starter and captain of the tennis team. Her 33 wins in singles play rank second at the school. Earned academic all-district honors. Member of the Key Club, SADD, SODA, Art Club and Drama Club and served as a mentor. Has a 3.27 GPA and will attend VCU. Ian Major was captain of the soccer team and was first-team all-district. Earned academic all-district honors. Served as vice president of the Spanish National Honor Society and was a member of the National Honor Society. Volunteered at a nursing home and youth soccer camps. The class salutatorian (4.85 GPA), he is bound for Virginia.

King William
Brandy Hence is the valedictorian (4.3 GPA) and played softball. Was all-district and was the Tidewater Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was a member of the National Honor Society and marching band and senior class vice president. She will attend Virginia. Matthew Harris has been a first-team all-district performer in soccer and multiple letter winner in soccer and football. He was a three-year captain in soccer. Was district all-academic for both sports and a member of the National Honor Society. He is fifth in his class (4.1 GPA) and will attend Virginia Tech.

L.C. Bird
Barbara Sitton earned firstor second-team all-district or all-region honors as a junior and senior. Is a past Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Was all-academic on the district and region levels. Is a member of the National Honor Society, President's Education Awards program and earned the Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award. Has a 4.7 GPA and will attend Davidson College. Davey McKissick was a four-year varsity volleyball player, who was all-district, all-region and all-state as a senior. Is a past Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Was president of the National Honor Society, secretary of the math honor society and member of Quill and Scroll. Has a 4.5 GPA and will attend William and Mary.

Lee-Davis
Kelsie Hudson played softball for four years and participated in volleyball and track. She is an all-district pitcher who was all-academic in softball and volleyball and was a member of the National Honor Society. She has a 4.07 GPA and will attend Catawba College. Eric Spott was the high jump and pole vault champion in the Capital District indoor meet and runner-up in the pole vault outdoors. Has competed in track for four years. Is a Hanover Scholar and a member of the Beta Club. Compiled a 4.3 GPA and will attend VCU.

Maggie Walker GS
* Susannah Piersol is the school's only three-time All-American. Set cross country and distance running school records and has been all-district and all-region many times. Was district runner of the year in cross country twice. She was in the National Honor Society and a member of the Spanish, Italian and English honor societies. Earned a 4.1 GPA and is going to Virginia. Peter Askin ran cross country, indoor and outdoor track and was captain of all three teams. Earned all-district and all-region honors. Has been All-Metro in all three sports. Was a member of the National Honor Society, history honor society and a past General Assembly page. Compiled a 3.89 GPA and will attend Davidson.

Manchester
Jennifer Thomas played basketball and field hockey for two years and was named defensive player of the year in field hockey. Was in the National Honor Society, BETA Club, Latin Club and is a Kick-Off Mentor. Carries a 3.9 GPA and will attend James Madison. Tyler Henderson started at quarterback and holds school records for most career passing yards and single-season marks for yards and TD passes. Was captain of the baseball team and an all-district outfielder and utility player. Was part of a guitar ensemble, and member of the National Honor Society and Student Council. Has 4.35 GPA and will attend Christopher Newport University.

Matoaca
Erika Bradshaw ranks No. 1 in her class with a 4.83 GPA. Was the field hockey team captain and made first-team all-district. In soccer, she was a two-year captain and second-team all-district twice. She was president of the National Honor Society and the senior class and will attend William and Mary. Robert Irving III was a three-year letterman in football and basketball. Was basketball team captain and football team co-captain and was all-academic in both sports. Has played AAU basketball with the U-Turn Warriors. Was a member of the National Honor Society with a 4.06 GPA. He will attend Old Dominion.

Meadowbrook
Kristina Cobbs was all-district in volleyball and second-team all-district in softball. Was captain of the volleyball team. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Interact Club and Future Business Leaders of America. Was senior class council secretary. Has a 3.7 GPA and is headed to VCU. Robert Pettis earned letters in volleyball, baseball and golf. Was vice president of the Drama Club and a member of the W.E.B. DuBois Honor Society. Has a 3.3 GPA and will attend Bethune-Cookman University.

Midlothian
* Paige Johnston is one of the area's most successful distance runners whether it be cross country or indoor or outdoor track events. She holds six school records, is a five-time state champion and earned the VHSL Group AAA female Achievement Award. She is vice president of the National Honor Society, member of the math honor society and volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and CARITAS. Carries a 4.4 GPA. Will run at the University of Arkansas. Nick Davis was a four-year letterman on the baseball team and served as captain this year. He battled back from shoulder surgery to play this season. Was a member of the Post 186 baseball team. A member of the National Honor Society and math honor society, he compiled a 4.47 GPA and is headed to Virginia.

Mills Godwin
* Michelle Foley was the Colonial District player of the year in basketball, first-team All-Metro and all-region; was second-team All-Metro and all-region in field hockey. Member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Beta Club and SCA. Has a 4.7 GPA and will study engineering at Virginia. Matt Hatcher won two Central Region wrestling titles, four Colonial District titles and finished third in this year's Group AAA tournament. Owns five school records and his 179 wins are the most in district history. Was a two-time All-Metro pick and member of four honor societies. Has a 4.64 GPA and will attend Virginia.

Monacan
Amanda Hopkins lettered in volleyball for four years and was captain the past two. Earned two letters in softball. Her GPA of 4.93 ranks first in her class. Was National Honor Society president and a member of the art and Spanish honor societies. Will attend Virginia. Jake Tuzzo was 5-1 with a 1.56 ERA and struck out 44 for the Chiefs' baseball team this season. Participated in indoor track and was a member of the National Honor Society and Latin Honor Society. Compiled a 4.4 GPA and will attend Virginia.

New Kent
Emily Schofield was a captain for the soccer and field hockey teams. She lettered four years in soccer and three years in field hockey. Founder and president of Young Republicans. Ranked No. 10 in her class with a 3.7 GPA, she will attend American University. Deylan Smith was a four-time letter winner in cross country and earned all-region honors last fall. He was all-district in outdoor track. Lettered three years in indoor and outdoor track. Was all-district and all-region in forensics (three letters). Has been a lifeguard and a Teen Praise Band participant. Has a 3.5 GPA and will attend Liberty University.

Patrick Henry
Christianna Moss has been All-Colonial District in the shot put and discus for four years. She won the state title in the discus in 2008 and '09. An all-academic pick in the district and region, she was the Senior Class secretary and a member of the National Honor Society. Her GPA is 3.854; will attend James Madison. Adrian Cavanaugh was a linebacker and running back on the football team. He was a two-time first-team All-Metro selection and was all-state as a senior. He was a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club. An Eagle Scout, he will attend James Madison and play football.

Petersburg
Ashley Whitaker led the Central District in scoring as a guard in basketball. Was named to the all-district and All-Tri-City first teams. Was second-team All-Metro and all-academic on the district and region levels. She is the top-ranked student in the class with a 4.33 GPA, and she will play basketball at Virginia State. Octavious Whitaker was a two-year letterman in football and track and field. He earned all-district honors in the high jump with a personal best of 6-0. He was sports editor of the yearbook and treasurer of the International Club. He will attend Virginia Union.

Powhatan
Karley Kranich lettered in volleyball and track. Chosen to play on the Richmond Volleyball 16 Nationals team and qualified for regional track in 110 and 300 hurdles. Has a 4.3 GPA. Was recording secretary for National Honor Society. Was school newspaper's editor in chief. Had a 4.3 GPA; will attend James Madison. Derek Christovich was a football captain, first-team all-state, all-region and all-district at offensive tackle. Also played defense. Was a member of the National Honor Society and won first place in the school Science Fair for physics. Was president of Teenage Republicans Club. Compiled a 4.3 GPA and will attend Virginia Tech.

Prince George
Chelsea Nave was captain of the field hockey and soccer teams. She is the class valedictorian with a 4.6 GPA. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll and Spanish Honor Society. Was editor in chief for The Royal News. She will attend Mount Holyoke (Mass.) College. Ryan Montgomery played four years of baseball, earning all-district honors as a catcher. Hit .396 in 48 at-bats with two home runs, 26 RBI and a .688 slugging percentage. Earned VHSL Academic Excellence Award for four years. Had a 3.7 GPA. Will attend Norfolk State and play baseball.

St. Catherine's
Stephanie Fort leaves an athletic legacy in softball. She earned all-LIS, all-state and All-Metro honors. She struck out 589 batters in her career, 177 this season. She hit .460. She was a standout in cross country and indoor track. She sang in an a cappella group. Carries a 3.3 GPA. Will attend and play softball at Allegheny College.

St. Gertrude
Taylor Trumble was a four-year varsity volleyball player and earned team awards each season. Was the team captain and earned all-LIS honors. Has a 4.0 GPA, is in the National Honor Society, was senior class president and on the Honor Council. Will attend Clemson.

St. Christopher's
* Jackson Freeman is one of the few true three-sport stars. He's going to Brown University (4.2 GPA) where he'll play football. He won 120 matches and was an All-American as a wrestler. He was a baseball starter and captain of all three teams. A high honors student, he also taught Bible School and ran a neighborhood lawn care.

Steward
Beth Farmer was captain of the field hockey team and an all-LIS selection. She plays soccer and is a three-time all-LIS pick. She participates in the Student Council Association, has a 3.4 GPA and will attend James Madison. Drew Coker is a baseball team captain who has been all-Virginia Commonwealth Conference and all-state. Is involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Diversity Club. He also had an internship with the R-Braves. He has a 3.1 GPA and will attend Old Dominion on a baseball scholarship.

Thomas Dale
* Julie Robertson starred in field hockey and soccer for four years and earned letters in indoor and outdoor track. In field hockey, she was a two-time district player of the year, All-Metro and all-region three years and all-state twice. Finished her career with 56 goals and 45 assists. Earned all-district and all-region honors in soccer, too. She was in three honor societies and compiled a 4.8 GPA. She is headed to Virginia.* Michael Green earned all-district and all-region honors in football and baseball. Was all-academic on both levels. He's in the National Honors Society and is a former class president and has received academic achievement honors in several subjects. Has a 4.59 GPA and is attending UNC Charlotte.

Thomas Jefferson
Stephanie Joseph played a year of volleyball and was on the track team for two years. Is in the National Honor Society, French Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars. Volunteers for Salvation Army (Homeless Project) and Special Olympics. Will attend VCU. John Carpin played four years of varsity soccer and spent two years on the varsity track team. Is in the National Society of High School Scholars, a winner of the Battle of the Brains, and is in TJ's Robotics club. Will attend Virginia Tech.

Trinity Episcopal
Barbara Strehler was a three-time All-Metro selection in cross country and in indoor and outdoor track. Holds the VIS state meet record at 1,000 and 1,600 meters. Was all-LIS in lacrosse and played volleyball and basketball. Was a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. Has a 3.85 GPA and will attend Virginia. Will Ericson was a co-captain in swimming and earned letters in crew, volleyball and track. Had 12 top-eight finishes, including relays, in the Prep League championships. Is an NISCA academic All-American. Was a member of all language clubs and president of the math honor society and the Spanish Club. Has a 4.54 GPA and will swim at Washington and Lee.

Varina
Morgan Williams lettered in softball and volleyball. Was first-team all-district in softball and a member of the National Honor Society and math honor society. Has a 4.19 GPA. Will attend Bridgewater and play softball. Austin McKim was all-district in baseball and an academic all-district selection three years. Was a member of the National Honor Society, math honor society and Student Congress. Was a past class president and worked on the yearbook. Has a 3.78 GPA and will attend Christopher Newport.
