Students Participate in VMFA Teen Stylin'

Two students created designs for the 15th annual exhibition.
Two St. Catherine’s girls competed in the VMFA Teen Stylin’ Runway Show on Sunday. Junior Cailin Petrus and seventh grader Ariana Miller were among 70 Virginia students in grades 6-12 who exhibited their creations at the museum’s 15th annual exhibition.
Students from 38 schools across the Commonwealth participated this year. Participants were screened through a competitive application that included an essay, art portfolio samples and teacher recommendations.
Petrus was assigned a 1960 painting/sculpture by Leo Bontecou made from welded steel, canvas and copper wire as her object of inspiration. Her original creation was modeled by junior Cat Allen. Miller drew inspiration from a royal buffalo mask from the Bamum culture for her creation, which was modeled by seventh grader Lily Davis. Miller’s design was awarded Most Creative Construction runner up for grades 6-8.
Upon acceptance, students worked for 12 weeks with local fashion designers and studio arts instructors to construct unique, wearable works of arts featuring unconventional materials that were inspired by items in the VMFA collection. Students were expected to research their inspiration object and adhere to design challenges related to this year’s theme “Adornment.”
