Career Day Speakers Inspire Students

A group of 23 alumnae spoke to students during the Upper School's Career Day.
Margaret Rheutan Lindhjem wasn’t sure what she wanted to pursue as a career.
“I just knew I enjoyed math and science and I was good at it,” said Lindhjem, a 1995 St. Catherine’s graduate.
Lindhjem turned that passion for math and science into a pioneering career as a NASCAR engineer. She was the first woman NASCAR engineer and now works with Toyota Racing Development in Charlotte, N.C.
Lindhjem was among 22 St. Catherine’s alumnae on campus Friday morning for the annual career day, which kicks off Reunion Weekend.
From medical research to journalism to athletics to business to veterinary medicine and even yoga, a variety of topics were presented for Upper School students, who were able to sit in three different sessions. All of the incredible Career Day speakers were St. Catherine’s alumnae.
Keynote speaker Vivien Godfrey ’80 started the day during chapel, addressing all the Upper School students, faculty and staff. She is the Chief Operating Officer of MilkPEP (Milk Processor Education Program) and directs activities for the national milk moustache Got Milk? campaign.
Godfrey inspired girls to keep an open mind, explore many options and eventually you will find something you love to do.
Lindhjem reinforced Godfrey’s message during the individual sessions.
“Whatever you do, you’ve got to love it,” Lindhjem said.  “Find something you love to do and go after it.”
Lindhjem also talked about her work in the wind tunnels with Toyota as well as excelling in a male dominated field.
Many of the speakers throughout the morning not only told about the careers and the path it took to get there, but also shared fun anecdotes and tips on how to pursue a career and balance family life.
Tanner Gibson Niebert '90 opened her session with an introduction from Sponge Bob Square Pants and Donkey from the movie Shrek while Rosemary Lockhorst '90 told how she emerged after being nearly homeless to Director of Business Development for Living PlanIT.
All of the speakers inspired the students and sparked their interests for future careers.
