Saints athletics introduced Derrhyl Duncan as the new indoor track and field coach and Alden Basmajian as the new outdoor track and field coach. Sherry Edwards has moved into an assistant coach role with both teams.
"I have hired hundreds of coaches during the past 22 years, I cannot state strongly enough how fortunate we have been at St. Catherine's to have all three of these outstanding coaches committed to our program and to working with our girls," Director of Athletics Julie Dayton said.
Duncan will take over indoor track and field this winter, He has been a part of Saints Athletics for the past six years. He is a former Division I athlete (Delaware State and Temple University) and has trained as a professional athlete. Duncan brings a wealth of experience and knowledge, as well as a commitment to the program. He is a tireless worker who will keep our indoor program operating at a high level.
"The thing I enjoy the most about coaching at St. Catherine’s is using track and field to make a lasting impression on the lives of our athletes," Duncan said. "I always believe it is important to coach the person first then the athletic side of things will fall into place. I also enjoy using the highs and lows of our sport to teach lessons that can be beneficial in all areas of their lives."
Basmajian will take the lead in the outdoor track and field program in the spring. He competed at St. Christopher's and at William & Mary, and is currently training and competing as a world-class triathlete. Basmajian also brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in training techniques and tactics. He has been our head cross coach for the past three seasons and has been the distance coach for indoor and outdoor the past six seasons.
"I enjoy working with such a great group of young, driven athletes who genuinely support each other while being competitive," Basmajian said. "The coaching staff is top rate and the camaraderie makes this job something to look forward to each day."
