Girls Innovate 2019 Celebrates International Day of the Girl

Nearly 1,000 girls joined together for the special day.
Nearly 1,000 girls in grades 4-12 from St. Catherine's and across Richmond joined together for Girls Innovate in celebration of International Day of the Girl. The event, held in the Kenny Center, was a high-energy, girl-centered morning featuring stories from people of all walks of life who are changing the world—women who will inspire girls to dream big and to use their voices for good.
The theme was "Celebrate our Voices" in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment. The United Nations declared Oct. 11 as International Day of the Girl in 2012.
Girls Innovate speakers were Martin Agency CEO Kristen Cavallo; award-winning filmmaker Denise Soler Cox; FlySci Enterprise CEO and Founder Dr. Knatokie Ford; Big Talk Creator and CEO Kalina Silverman; local artists and Co-Founders of Another Limited Rebellion Mica and Noah Scalin and Illustrator Virginia Strobach. NBC12 Weekend Anchor Jasmine Turner emceed the event. Strobach live illustrated the event as the speakers presented. Dancers from Studio Four in Richmond performed during the event.
Following the speakers, the Upper School students returned to their advisories to engage in Big Talk activities. Big Talk is a social experiment first created by Silverman. The Big Talk Question Card Game helps facilitate in-depth conversations with friends, family, coworkers, and strangers. Silverman and Turner visited the classrooms to engaged in the activity as well.
Cox spent extra time with the Enye Club students during lunch.
Prior to the speakers, Middle Schoolers engaged in special activities during their Strong Circles time. Lower School students not in attendance for the speaker did special activities throughout the day.
In addition to faculty and staff working on the event, seniors Ellen Herrera, Keely Seward, Eliza Smack, and Liddy Wade and recent alumna Belle O'Keefe were key in the planning and execution of the event.
