Dr. Anne Charity Hudley ’94

A lifelong scholar and advocate, Dr. Anne Charity Hudley ’91 has dedicated her career to exploring how language and education intersect. After earning her B.A. and M.A. in Linguistics from Harvard and her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, she went on to leadership roles at William & Mary and the University of California, Santa Barbara before joining Stanford University, where she now serves as Associate Dean of Educational Affairs and Professor of Education, African-American Studies, and Linguistics.

Her research focuses on the relationship between language variation and educational practice, with an emphasis on equity and opportunity for underrepresented students. Widely published and the co-author of two books, Dr. Charity Hudley is a fellow of both the Linguistic Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She is also a sought-after lecturer, mentor, and community advocate, working tirelessly to affirm the richness of all dialects and help educators better serve every student.
