St. Catherine's Celebrates International Day of the Girl

Each division celebrated the special day with speakers and activities.
Each year the International Day of the Girl is celebrated on October 11, as declared by the United Nations.
St. Catherine's believes in education for all girls, and the School proudly celebrated the sixth annual International Day of the Girl on Wednesday. This year, each division planned enriching, age-appropriate activities for the day.
The day featured inspiring speakers making a difference on the regional, national and international level. It brought to light the quality of life faced by refugees, gave a glimpse into a day at St. Catherine's partner school in Nepal and provoked thoughtful conversations.
The Lower School gathered for a special chapel service to hear from guest speaker Angela Luna. She shared with them her childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer and how that dream grew into a humanitarian design. Luna designs jackets that can be turned into tents and used by refugees. She is the founder and CEO of ADIFF.
The girls also watched a video from St. Catherine's partner school Kopila Valley School in Nepal including some of the girls the Lower School sponsors to attend and live at the school.
The Middle School girls were inspired and wowed during Girls Innovate, an event featuring four impressive speakers and moderated by NBC12 anchor Karla Redditte. They heard from alumna Julia Warren ’14 about her celebrate RVA nonprofit organization; Axana Sultan, Founder and CEO of Enhancing Children’s Lives; Sarah Lenti who is a Policy Consultant and Board Member for the National Immigration Forum and Angela Luna (who spoke with the Lower Schoolers earlier that morning).
The event kicked off with the award-winning VCU Bhangra dancers. Before the speakers took the stage, the Middle Schoolers honored fifth grader Emmy Sumpter, who was a winner on Food Network’s Chopped Junior (the episode aired the night before the event).
Following Girls Innovate, the Middle School girls gathered into their Strong Circles groups to engage in a design challenge to build a community out of recycled materials.
The Upper School is exploring the theme of home and our place in the world throughout the 2017-2018 school year. In keeping with that theme, the students watched the acclaimed documentary film “The Resettled” about refugees building new lives in the United States. The girls discussed the film, followed by a Q&A session with panelists who represented several organizations who work closely with refugee families in the Richmond region.
