St. Catherine's Wins National Award

The School received a $1,000 for ninth grade project.
St. Catherine’s is one of just two schools nationwide awarded the Center for Spiritual and Ethical Education (CSEE) Exemplar School Prize. The School will receive a $1,000 grant for the ninth grade Ethical Response to Poverty course as well as service learning work. Notre Dame Academy of Los Angeles was the other recipient.
“This award reminds me that our ninth grade team is doing some remarkable work,” said Drew Johnson, Upper School Service Learning Coordinator and Religion and Philosophy teacher “We have a group of thoughtful and creative educators that are not as interested as simply teaching children about the poverty, as much as we want to invite them into the conversation to change the landscape.”
Johnson helps guide the ninth grade project, which coincides with X-Term times and is required by all freshmen. He also submitted the project for the award.
The CSEE promotes ethical and spiritual growth in schools across the nation.
“You not only had good ideas, but you integrated them together in a way that makes them more powerful than the sum of their parts,” CSEE Executive Director Bob Mattingly said in the letter to St. Catherine's announcing the award. “Your program helps to remind schools that social-emotional learning needs to be integrated, no added to the nature of our schools.”
