Students Win National Awards

Alizeh Khalid  '18 and Scarlett Han '17 were honored with national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
Two Upper School students were recently honored with national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in visual arts.
Junior Alizeh Khalid and 2017 graduate Scarlett Han both received national silver medals. They are two of just 118 students in grades 7-12 from the state of Virginia who were honored with national awards. Students across America, representing public, private and home schools, submitted 330,000 original works during the 2017 program year.
Khalid received her silver medal for the photograph "Women at Work." Han was honored for her gesture drawing “15 Seconds,” which was created in just 15 seconds.
“I think it is remarkable that she received a national award for a drawing she created in 15 seconds,” Visual Arts Coordinator Diego Sanchez said. “It is a beautiful drawing and it reminds me of old master drawing.”
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Through the Awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships.
