RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — One thousand girls packed an auditorium in Richmond on Friday as speakers encouraged them to participate in STEM fields often dominated by males.

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — One thousand girls packed an auditorium in Richmond on Friday as speakers encouraged them to participate in STEM fields often dominated by males.
All the speakers were women, and that alone served as inspiration for the girls.
“It was fun getting to hear about these amazing people’s stories and experiences and it really inspired me to do great things,” says Neely McDowell, a 6th grader at St. Catherine’s School.
“They were just so inspiring, they make me want to do more with my life and give back like they do,” says Noor Samee a junior at St. Catherine’s School.
The St. Catherine’s School organized this event for girls from all over Richmond. Among the speakers was a a director of photography at Pixar Animation Studios.
“I hope when I step off the stage that there’s girls out there feel inspired in whatever way possible, like they think math is cool or coding is cool,” says Danielle Feinberg, who works with Pixar.
“I am here because it matters to me that girls think about engineering as a potential career,” says Dr. Rosalyn Hargraves, an associated professor at Virginia Commonwealth University and an engineer.
There was also a social entrepeneur who works closely with Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai.
