Math Teacher Finishes Ninth at World Championship

Alden Basmajian finished ninth in his age group in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in St. George, Utah.
     Upper School math teacher Alden Basmajian competed in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in St. George, Utah over the weekend. Out of the 3,441 athletes, he placed 92nd overall and ninth in his age group.
     "It was a great day of racing with challenges all over the course and I'm happy to come away with a top 10 age group finish in the world," said Basmajian, who coaches both cross country and track at St. Catherine's.
     Basmajian, who is a St. Christopher's alum, said the past few months have been very focused training for the World Championships.
     The event over the weekend consisted of 1.2-mile open water swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run. It is also known as the Half Iron Man. Basmajian qualified for the Ironman World Championship, which was postponed until October 2022 and is scheduled to take place in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
