Alumna Raises the Voices of Women Once Silenced

Heath Hardage Lee '88 spoke to Upper School students as part of the Camp Speaker Series.
For years they were told to be quiet and not speak up.
But when they finally did, the wives of the POWs and MIAs during the Vietnam War made things happen.
Alumna Heath Hardage Lee ’88 is making sure their voices are still heard today. She spoke to Upper School students this morning about her book, “The League of Wives:  The Untold Story of the Women Who Took on the U.S. Government to Bring Their Husbands Home from Vietnam.” She is speaking at both St. Catherine’s and St. Christopher’s as part of the Camp Speaker Series.
Lee gave the students a brief background of the Vietnam War and then told the stories of some of the women who championed the cause as their husbands were held as POWs. Her book caught the attention of Reese Witherspoon, whose Hello Sunshine company will produce the film with Sony 3000 movie studio. Lee will be an executive producer and historical consultant on the project.
"These women changed the role of military spouses forever," Lee told the students. "They became advocates."
Watch and listen to Lee's talk with Upper School students.
After speaking to the entire Upper School in the morning, Lee engaged with Upper School students in History, Government and English classes.
The Camp Speakers Endowment was created in memory of St. Christopher’s alum Paul Douglas Camp III ’56. His daughter Elizabeth Hanson graduated from St. Catherine’s in 1984. The Speakers Endowment was inspired by Paul’s devotion to his family, to education and to the community. Although Paul Camp was a dedicated servant of many organizations, above all he valued education and the strong foundation in service and character embodied in St. Christopher’s and St. Catherine’s Schools.
