Gurkin Honored on St. Catherine's Day

Archer Gurkin was named the Class of 2020 St. Catherine's Day honoree.
It all came down to a stuffed bear wearing a Saints T-shirt. When making a decision for what school to send their daughter to for kindergarten, Archer Gurkin knew the choice was obvious.
     She wanted the bear.
Fast forward to her senior year and it is Gurkin that is representing St. Catherine's as the Class of 2020 St. Catherine's Day honoree. She was honored during the traditional St. Catherine's Day Service on Friday. This year the service was held at All-Saints.
A time-honored tradition, St. Catherine’s Day celebrates the senior who, by the vote of her classmates and faculty best represents scholarship, determination, courage, hope and faith, the ideals of Catherine of Alexandria.
"I am so grateful for that bear in a Saints shirt, because these past 13 years have not only provided me with a strong education but have also shown me and all of us how to live our best possible lives," Gurkin said during her speech.
She recounted her 13 years at the School and how many of her classmates and faculty have been saints in her own life.
"The support and community found here give us the courage to stand up for what we believe in, and to have faith in ourselves and each other," Gurkin said. "... The lessons learned here provide the foundations to carry the values of Catherine of Alexandria with us in our lives far beyond the walls of our school."
St. Catherine’s Day is a tradition that has changed throughout the decades, but dates back to 1924. The revealing of the St. Catherine’s Day honoree is kept secret until the service. The service is also a special time to remember alumnae, faculty and staff who have died over the past year.
