Times-Dispatch: Scholar-athlete of the month: St. Catherine's Hannah Ballowe

Senior Hannah Ballowe was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Month by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Athletic accomplishments: A runner on the cross country team, Hannah led St. Catherine’s to the LIS championship and repeated as the individual winner, finishing the 5K race in 19:26. It was the third race in October in which she finished first. She also won the VISAA individual championship, leading St. Catherine’s to the team title. Hannah holds five school records in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.
Academic accomplishments: Hannah won the Peace Essay contest, achieved a cum laude score on the National Latin Exam and was selected to the U.S. Air Force Academy summer seminar. She scored a 1420 on the SAT and a 5 on the AP world history exam. She’ll run for Virginia Tech next year.

Favorite class: “Creative writing with Mr. Morgan.”
Future major: “Maybe biology with a minor in journalism.”
Three words to describe her: “Competitive, helpful, sarcastic.”
Strength: “In general I’m pretty dedicated and driven.”
Toughest opponent: “Collegiate, my coaches, including Sherry Edwards at St. Catherine’s, and my strength and conditioning coach, Gary Chilcoat.”
Working to improve: “Staying focused and positive before races.”
Best sports memory: Last fall, St. Catherine’s won a state title, and this past spring, in track and field, the 4x400 relay team came from behind to win a state championship.
Favorite food: “Peanut butter.”
Favorite candy: “Dark chocolate.”
On her playlist: “Alternative rock.”
Most embarrassing thing on her playlist: “The ‘Drake & Josh’ theme song.”
If she had one wish: “I wish cancer wasn’t a thing.”
What most people don’t know about her: “I have hearing loss.”
If she could go on any game show: “Family Feud.”
If she could travel anywhere in the world: “Hiking in Yosemite.”
Hero: “Coach Chilcoat.”
If she could have any superpower: “Telekinesis.”
Best advice she’s received: “Don’t take things too seriously.”
Her house is burning down and she can take only one thing with her: “A box of letters and thank you notes.”
