  • I get a browser error about TLS. What does it mean?

Blackbaud's cloud-based security service, K12 Shield, provides a new level of protection and security to the “on” Products. With this newer security, older browsers, such as Internet Explorer 7, 8, 9, and 10, Safari 6, and Firefox 23 and 24, need to be updated for the new encryption method to be used.
Note: The best way to avoid this error is to make sure you are using the most up-to-date version of your web browser. However, if you are unable to get the latest version, you will need to modify your browser settings, as follows:

    Instructions for IE:

The compatible versions of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) encryption method need to be manually set in your browser settings.
    1. Open Internet Explorer
    2. Click on the Tools menu
    3. Select Internet Options
    4. Select the Advanced tab and scroll to the bottom
    5. Unmark the boxes for the older and less secure versions of SSL and TLS (highlightedred in the image below)
    6. Mark the boxes for TLS 1.1 and 1.2
    • Click Apply
    • Restart your browser for the new settings to take effect.

    Instructions for Firefox:

    1. Open Firefox
    2. In the address bar, enter about:config
    3. Click the button to continue past the warning
    4. Enter security.tls.version.max in the Search field
    5. Double click on the integer in the Value field
    6. Change the value to 3, which will enable TLS 1.2
    7. Click OK
    8. Restart your browser
