St. Catherine's Diversity Efforts Featured
The MS Prejudice Awareness Club is featured in the enewsletter for The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities.
In the "Building Inclusive Schools" April enewsletter, the following is detailed about St. Catherine's:
- - - ACTION PLAN PROFILE: ST. CATHERINE’S MIDDLE SCHOOL - - -
Each month, we seek to profile activities taking place in Virginia high schools that advance Inclusive Communities’ work. As you hold programs in your school throughout the year, please share information about them to be included in future monthly email updates! This month, we profile the students from St. Catherine’s Middle School who attended the Prejudice Awareness Summit in October. The students planned several events commemorating the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. On this half day of activities, the students started with lunch table conversations about times when they felt they were true and important members of St. Catherine’s community. After lunch, the girls designed a paper Community Quilt square that not only displays an individual representation of each girl in the Strong Circle but also the collective identity of the Circle as well, they then moved into a presentation by the Prejudice Awareness Club to the whole middle school where they showed a movie that was created by the students about the message of Martin Luther King, Jr. After the presentation by the Prejudice Awareness Club, students broke up into small discussion groups and they ended the day by watching the documentary, “Children Full of Life.”
