Ambassador Inspires Sixth Graders

Omar Faye, representing the Republic of The Gambia, visited St. Catherine's.
Character and courage. Those two words were repeated often as Ambassador Omar Faye, representing the Republic of The Gambia, met with sixth graders Thursday afternoon.
He recounted his own story as a child, an Olympian, a soldier and now a leader —and how he is often called upon to use his courage in order to uphold his character.
Faye visited the campus as part of the World Languages celebration. Thursday’s meeting was made possible by artist, educator and human rights activist Yewande Austin, who met with faculty and staff last week about diversity.
Courage was on full display when Ambassador Faye called for former Gambian president Yahya Jammeh to step down last fall after Jammeh lost the election. Jammeh had said he'd concede his loss, but rejected the outcome. Ambassador Faye stood strong, holding to his character, even though his security was threatened. Jammeh officially relinquished the position in January.
Before answering thoughtful questions from the students, Ambassador Faye left the girls with the following advice: be humble and don’t hate; think positively and give much and distance yourself from negativity.
