RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — With more than 300 students at St. Catherine’s, it took about an hour to pack more than 50,000 meals that will go to those in desperate need.
“It was awesome, just this big adrenaline rush and everyone was supportive and helping each other and getting all excited,” said student Katie Wrenn Lambert.
The school teamed up with “Stop Hunger Now,” a group that sends food internationally to places where hunger is a big problem. The group has already started sending food to Haiti, where nearly 300 people have died due to Hurricane Matthew. That number could rise as the floodwaters start to recede.
Friday’s event will help in those efforts. The hurricane hits close to home for the students as St. Catherine’s has a sister school in Haiti.
“We’re hoping that these meals will affect them as well as any of their community members, so I think it’s a really great opportunity for us to help them out,” added student Sally Mauck.
“As Haiti is being hit by the hurricane, it’s important for us to take time out to give back,” said Drew Johnson, director of service learning at St. Catherine’s.
Johnson helped organize Friday’s event. He says it’s important for their students to learn the meaning of giving back.
“I think schools need to put money where their mouth is when they talk about service,” said Johnson.
“We believe it’s extremely important to take time out of our day to remember what we’re thankful for and to remember those who aren’t as blessed as we are,” said student Catie Nolan.
They say while Haiti may be hundreds of miles away, the people and their struggles are close to their hearts.
The food will not only help people in Haiti but other countries as well.
