St. Catherine's sophomore goalie Emily Wigg had eight saves as the Saints defeated Trinity Episcopal 2-0 on Saturday to win the Division I VISAA state soccer championship.
In three state tournament games, Wigg allowed only three goals and racked up more than 30 saves, earning VISAA Division I state player-of-the-year honors along the way.
"She has been very good all season, but those types of awards don't usually go to goalkeepers," St. Catherine's assistant coach Andy McIntosh said. "I think that the reasons why she received that award were evident today in the game.
"So for her to get recognized is incredible to her and incredible to the team."
Wigg was shocked she was named state player of the year.
"It was superexciting. I wasn't expecting it at all," she said. "I thought that there were some other people that stepped up, but all in all, it was a great feeling and it is something I will remember for a long time.
"It's only going to give me motivation, coming into next year," she continued. "I think I am going to be really pumped and it will carry into my training and my games, and I'm hoping next year we can do just as well."
Trinity (18-4-2) came out on fire, and in the 15th minute of the first half, it appeared the Titans were going to score. But Wigg had back-to-back saves and the game was 0-0 at halftime.
"It's frustrating, because you feel like you do everything right and you have your players in a position to score a goal that in any other game this year is probably in the net," Trinity Episcopal coach Rich Hamlin said.
"When she stops you stone cold like that, it is deflating, and it is tough, but credit to her," Hamlin said. "There's a reason that she's the player of the year, and she deserves it."
However, in the second minute of the second half, it was St. Catherine's (18-0-2) that came out on fire when Virginia Jesselson scored the first goal of the game.
Jesselson also scored the game's only other goal about 10 minutes after her first one, a goal that eventually sealed the win for the Saints.
It was the Titans' first trip to the state tournament and they had the most wins in team history.
"Trinity had a remarkable season. I'm really incredibly proud of our team. I love our team and I love our seniors," Hamlin said.
