Saints Play Tough Dismissing St. Gertrude's!

Lindalee Mulligan
The Saints were strong off the opening draw, adjusting to the modified format, causing turnovers by holding good defensive positioning for 3 seconds when they could not check. Early on, it looked like the Saints would run away with the game.  An excellent double team was put on by midfielders Carolyn Pratt and Isabelle Warren to disrupt St. Gert's transition game.  With a four goal lead St. Gert's was given a midfield free position in lieu of the draw and ran straight to goal.  The Saints kept going 4 goals ahead and then St. Gert's would score off the midfield free positions, such are the rules of modified checking. The Saints kept putting on the double teams causing numerous turnovers.  Style points go to the attackers and midfielders for their many well-placed shots, making the most of their scoring opportunities.  The defense held strong when faced with the run and gun - one of the hardest plays to defend against - forcing St. Gert's wide or double teaming and gaining possession on many occasions.   The Saints hung tough until the end, closing out the game 13-11 by shutting down a last minute sustained run from St. Gert's.
Scoring for the Saints were Carolyn Pratt (4), Arlo Gray (3), Brucie Mish (2), Katie McCarthy (1), Belle O'Keefe (1) and Isabelle Warren (1).  One goal was scored off a misdirected goalie clear.  Once again, Kalli Wagnon came up with a stellar 15 saves in goal!
