Fifth Graders Finding Solutions to Water Deficiency

Members of the Challenge 20/20 Club are working with a school in Turkey to solve the global water crisis.
Grouped in pairs, students filled and then carried buckets of water around the Green. They raced against each other trying to be fast, but preserve every drop of water at the same time.
St. Catherine’s fifth grade students were joined by Pam Roberts’ fourth graders for a water walk to raise awareness for the global water crisis. The Challenge 20/20 club designed and sponsored the St. Catherine's activity.
The students worked with their homerooms to carry buckets of water around the Green, simulating what women and children go through in other countries across the world. Students collected water from a "well” (a trashcan filled with water), and then walked around the Green carrying water and reading different facts about the water crisis. After finishing the walk, students took a quiz on the facts they learned from their walk.
Challenge 20/20 is an Internet-based program overseen by National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) that pairs classes at any grade level (K-12) from schools in the U.S. with their counterpart classes in schools in other countries. Together, the teams (of two or three schools) find local solutions to one of 20 global problems.
St. Catherine’s Middle School Challenge 20/20 Club is working alongside a school in Izmir, Turkey trying to find local solutions to the global problem of water deficiency. The students from SEV Middle School in Turkey also organized a water walk to raise awareness in their school community.
